Products, equipment and components that come into contact with drinking water have to be evaluated to ensure that adverse health effects do not result from the leaching of hazardous substances and contaminants into the drinking water supply and distribution system.
Country-specific certification includes NSF for the United States, WRAS for the United Kingdom, Germany UBA (KTW), France ACS, and Australia AS/NZS.
GMORS offers elastomeric sealing products like o-rings, seals and gaskets, diaphragms and custom molded parts which complies with the above standards.
NSF develops the standards for testing, and offers services which includes the testing itself, certification, inspection and auditing as well as consulting and training services.
NSF-61 measures the amount of lead and other heavy metals and organic materials that are released into the water when the product is used. NSF-61 material certification related to sanitary and potable water industry includes:
1) Section 6: Joining and Sealing Materials: This includes O-rings, gaskets and various custom molded parts in materials such as EPDM, Silicone, NBR and more.
2) Section 9: Mechanical Plumbing Devices: Mechanical piping: faucets, showers, sprayers, water coolers, flexible pipe joints for residential use, hot and cold water exchangers and so on.
WRAS is the acronym for Water Regulations Advisory Scheme, and it is a certification of compliance in accordance with British Standards BS6920 that relates to the protection of public health in the prevention of water contamination by products or materials that comes into contact with drinking water. Its scope of tests includes all materials that are in contact with water, such as plumbing pipes, faucets, valve parts, rubber products, plastics and so on, and materials that may be used to manufacture related equipment. WRAS is the standard applicable in the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and South East Asian Countries.
ACS (Attestation De Conformité Sanitaire) Certification is a requirement in France that evaluates the use of products, parts and materials that comes into contact with drinking water. It is mainly based on the standards issued by AFNOR (Association Francaise de Normalisation) for the testing of plumbing related products. All products that comes into contact with drinking water has to acquire ACS Certification in France prior to legal sales.
DVGW (Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches) is the largest certification body for the water and gas industry in Europe. Product manufacturers acquire a DVGW CERT certificate to demonstrate product compliance, and DVGW W-270 of the standard relates specifically to the approval of material for drinking water applications. Products and materials are evaluated on the basis of chemical substance migration and microorganism growth.
UBA (Umweltbundesamt) German Environment Agency is the authority for drinking water material certification and establishes the health safety standards in the regulation of products that comes into contact with drinking water. The KTW (Kunststoffe und Trinkwasser) Certification relates to the assessment of material used in the production, distribution and storage of drinking water to determine level of contamination. DVGW-approved laboratories provide migration testing at specified temperatures. KTW Certification is also widely recognized in Europe and around the world.
GMORS is a leading developer of materials for elastomeric sealing applications, and offers products like o-rings, seals, gaskets and custom molded rubber components that comply with all major certifying authorities such as NSF, WRAS, ACS, UBA (KTW), W-270 and Australia AS / NZS4020.
.NSF Certification
NSF Section 6 certified products offered by GMORS include N7041AA, E7041AA, E7042AA, E7051AA, S7031AB. In particular, N7041AA (NBR70, sulfur cured), E7051AA (EPDM70, sulfur cured) and E7041AA (EPDM70, peroxy cured), are materials that are suitable for use in dynamic applications.
S7031AB (silicone70, peroxide cured) has excellent heat resistance and is generally regarded as non-toxic to humans. Silicone seals are suitable for use with water filtration systems, water dispensers as well as for sealing use in showerheads.
E7042AA (EPDM70, peroxide cured) features low compression set and good anti-chloramine resistance. It is suitable for use in swimming pool disinfection systems, and has also been evaluated for use in mechanical plumbing applications with a maximum surface area to volume ratio of 2.0 sq. inch/L. It is worth mentioning that the E7041AA has achieved the highest material safety standards under Section 9 of NSF-61 for the exclusion of harmful levels of contaminants leached from "end-point" plumbing devices. "End-point" devices include drinking water fountains, stop valves and kitchen faucets.
.WRAS Certification
WRAS Certification can be divided into materials and components. GMORS is WRAS certified for the following compounds under the respective section subtitles:
E7053AA. Black colored, compression moulded EPDM rubber `O`-Ring. Shore hardness 70. For use with water up to 85°C.
Section Subtitle: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) - components.
N7018AA. Black colored, compression moulded NBR rubber material. Shore hardness 72. For use with water up to 85°C.
Section Subtitle: Nitrile (Acrylonitrile Butadiene) material only.
E8083AA. Black colored, compression moulded EPDM rubber material. Shore hardness 80. For use with water up to 85°C.
Section Subtitle: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) - material only.
